Small Bricklaying Company
A small bricklaying contractor was finding that the Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) he was providing to clients was not satisfying their requirements, with the result that he was getting less work. SafetyWise visited him on site, carrying out a site check and delivering a toolbox talk for his workers. We also drew up new RAMS for him based on his risks and activities. He has since been commended for his health and safety standards, and has found that “ticking the health and safety box” means he gets more high value work on large sites. This has proved an inexpensive route to greater business success for him.
Office Based Company
The company is fairly newly established, with operations overseas as well as in the UK. Although a health and safety policy has been produced, it is not addressing the risks of the company. SafetyWise carried out a review, and provided a brief report for management which outlined what the important risks of the operations were, and how they should be managed. Following this,SafetyWise drew up simple systems based on the company’s profile, which were easy to implement and did not cause a lot of work and trouble. SafetyWise also worked with the Office Manager to carry out computer workstation risk assessments, leaving the Office Manager with the competences necessary to keep these assessments up to date.
Where the risks are higher, more input is likely to be needed. SafetyWise provided one day a week of health and safety support for a local engineering works. Over the course of a few months, we were able to completely update the policy, systems and risk assessments, as well as carrying out regular audits and checks, providing training and giving advice and support for managers and workers. We also got the health and safety committee operating, liaised with insurers and regulators and carried out the fire risk assessment for the works. Finally we mentored an in house manager as he took over some of the health and safety responsibilities allowing our involvement to decrease to monthly monitoring and support.
Public Sector Multi Site
It is hard to manage many remote sites effectively, especially when their activities are different between sites. We have been able to support a large employer by visiting each site every six months, assessing how they are managing the health and safety of the building, the fire risks and the safety of the staff team. At every visit, we rate the site on their performance in these areas, at the same time advising and supporting the manager to make steady improvements. This keeps the focus on the health and safety effort, also generating reliable information for the senior management team. Over a period, health and safety performance has improved considerably and reached reassuringly high standards.
